This is the St. Joseph Skeptics blog page. designed to provide a place for members to exchange ideas and get answers to questions. However, it is not limited to members only. Anyone with pertinent comments or questions is welcome to include a blog.
At present this page is not monitored – but it can be. Whatever you write will appear on this page. You are expected to follow all usual rules of good behavior – no improper words, name calling, or yelling. The only reason anyone should use all caps is if their Shift key is stuck.
At the first sign these simple rules are not being followed, this page will be shut down. When it is reopened, it will be for members only. And they will have to use a password to get in. So let’s use this page properly and keep it open for everyone.
By the way, as indicated above, we welcome people whose philosophy of life is different than ours. Ask questions. Make comments. However, telling us that we will burn in hell because we do not worship your god will do no good. The majority of us are quite sure there is no such place.
A couple of notes:
- Please include a title. It will make it easier to keep track of things.
- The date and time will be added automatically.
- Keep the message relatively short. If you have a lot to say, it could be included on the “Thoughts” page.
- Add your name at the bottom of the message. You may use a pseudonym if you wish, but please send us an email letting us know who you are. Again, it will help us keep track of things.
- The messages will appear in date order with the most recent at the bottom.
- The area where you enter a message is at the bottom of the page. If necessary, scroll down to find it.
- When you click the “Submit” button, your message is added to the data base and will appear the next time the Blog page is opened. If you are anxious to see it immediately, click the “Blogs” button on the bar at the top of the page.
- When this page gets too full, the earliest messages will be removed. They will be saved, and if it seems appropriate, we will add a second page of stored messages.
That’s it. If you have a problem with this page, send me an email. Or a blog.
Bob

Annoyed!
5/18/2009, 9:06:25 PM
I just got a very strange phone call from a religious zealot. He started asking me about my religious beliefs and I told him I didn't believe in God. He then asked me if I believed in evolution and I said yes, of course. He asked why and I told him of the scientific research, etc, etc. He said "I don't see it that way" and click, I was hung up on! Isn't this just the type of "bumper sticker" person Harrison spoke about? Jeez, how unfair I did not even get a chance to argue with him, bummer. I wish he would call me back but I bet my name is off that list:-)

Intelligent design

First off, Harrison Hartley's talk was fantastic. I'd love to see some more events like that, and it was a good introduction to the society. It's great to see a group, albeit small, thriving in such a seemingly conservative town in the Bible Belt.
From reading the blog, I see a bit of discourse about intelligent design. I suffer from allergies and bruxism, both of which I've had my entire life, and I fail to see how any intelligent being would want to design such things into us. The theologian apologists would love to say that overcoming these things builds character. What intelligent and powerful force would see a choice between creating an organism with character, or one with flaws that would hopefully result in character, and decide on the one with flaws? Are shortcuts and cost-saving measures really necessary for this designer?

WELCOME
5/19/2009, 3:08:52 PM
Lu -- Welcome to the blog page. Seems to me you have enough character that you don't need sneezing and runny eyes to give you more. Come to our regular meetings. It's little more than a group of folks with ideas similar to yours who appreciate the fact we can get together and chat without being told we're going to hell.

Hey Annoyed

I got one of those phone calls too, about the same time you did. (Sorry I haven't written sooner -- meant to mention it at a meeting and keep forgetting.) I have an idea it was either a straight survey or a way to get new church members disguised as a survey. Anyway, I hung up on the caller then realized what it was and was sorry I did -- could have had some fun!!! (By the way, you didn't sign the email.)

Thanks to Marilyn for the hospitality last Sunday. I had a great time. I am thrilled to have found this smart a diversified group of free thinkers. I will look forward to the next meeting.

Special Guest
7/6/2009, 11:30:25 PM
Last meeting (July 5) we had a guest, Greg Lammers, Missouri State Director, American Atheists. I emailed him to get his thoughts on our meeting. Here is his reply:
"Hi Bob,
"I had a great time, I appreciate you having me and the work you do with the group. The discussion was wide ranging, you have some thoughtful people in your group. I will certainly visit whenever I can.
"The informal, free flowing nature of the group meeting is common. Most of the groups I've met with have had lively discussions. Meetings are often pretty loosely structured.
"See you again soon,
"Greg Lammers
"Missouri State Director
"American Atheists"
I guess our rather rambling meetings are the norm.

Prison GED program

I've been informed that the prison is interested in getting its GED program going again. My name and phone # have been given to the contact person, so I may know more in the near future.
